Breastfeeding: many confirmed benefits for the health of the newborn. But let's not forget that there are also many for the mom's health, first of all the lower risk of getting sick of breast cancer. New research has also shown that breastfeeding, as well as in the preventive phase, is useful to protect women reducing mortality even if the tumor has presented itself.

Several researches over the last few years prove how women who have been breastfeeding for at least 6 months have a lower risk of developing breast cancer. This is due to the fact that breastfeeding allows the breast cells to complete their maturation becoming even more resistant to malignant transformations.

Now a new confirmation of the benefits of breastfeeding comes from a new search which among other things underlines how the beneficial effect of this very natural gesture is not only of a preventive nature. In fact, it seems that women who have breastfed see reduce the severity of breast cancer, in case it has occurred, and therefore have a greater probability of survival.

The researchers ofLinköping University in Sweden, analyzed the 20-year survival rates of 630 women who had been treated for breast cancer between 1988 and 1992. Of these, 341 were tracked and subsequently sampled in relation to their reproductive activity and breastfeeding. The conclusion was that a breastfeeding history of more than six months is associated with greater cancer specific survival but also overall.

The study is important because it is the first that went to examine the link between breastfeeding and women's survival.

Researchers are unclear on the mechanisms whereby this effect occurs. Perhaps it is a hormonal consequence or it derives from the fact that during the period of breastfeeding the cells of the breast change becoming more resistant to the changes that lead to the appearance of cancer. He commented on the results obtained in this way, Arthur I. Eidelman, coordinator of the team of experts who saw their research published in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine:

“This study confirms that the long-term health benefits of breastfeeding are not just preventative but that it also has the ability to reduce the severity of breast cancer ”.
