Max he started walking again thanks to free treatment made available by "publication" the first public veterinary hospital opened in Brazil last year in the Tatuapé neighborhood in the east of San Paulo. The project was born from an idea of Roberto Tripoli and is part of the initiatives of the Coordenadoria Especial de Proteção at Animais Domésticos, the special coordination center for the protection of pets.

At the end of June, Max fell from the attic of the house he lived in and fractured his front legs. On the day of the accident, Graziela, the woman he was living with took him to a veterinary clinic. There he was diagnosed with fractures that required surgery on both legs. An expense that her human friend of hers did not have the opportunity to face: "I didn't have that money," says Graziela, who lives in rent and had just discovered she was pregnant with her.

Max lived with fractures for 20 days and when Graziela had lost hope, she received the phone call she was waiting for: "They told me there was a public hospital where Max could do the surgery for free. I did not believe it. I had heard about the project from the Tripoli councilor, but I did not know that it had already been completed ”.

Max was taken to the hospital where he was followed and operated on by a team of veterinarians from Anclivepa-SP, inaugurating the surgical center. The unit, entirely financed by the Municipality, was inaugurated on 2 July and is managed by Anclivepa-SP (National Association of Small Animal Veterinarians of Sao Paulo). According to the general director of the hospital, Ricardo Coutinho do Amaral, the service is completely free and dedicated to the owners of animals who are correctly registered in the Social Programs of the Municipality (Bolsa Família and RendaMinima), to animals from kennels and to NGOs for the animal protection regularly registered, in addition to the animals kept in the Zoonosis Centers.

According to Coutinho, the service is still on limited and there are many steps forward to take. A few days after starting, the veterinary service already had a staff of 14 veterinarians covering areas such as orthopedics, anesthesiology, dermatology, internal medicine, clinical laboratories, general surgery. In the future, it should also have outpatient clinics for ophthalmology, endocrinology, nephrology and urology, acupuncture and homeopathy, ultrasound, radiology, oncology and feline medicine.

According to Renato Tartalia, the hospital's administrative director, the inauguration of the public veterinary unit is a dream come true, but it goes beyond the protection and care of animals. “It is a dream to be able to guarantee the dogs and cats of less well-off people the same treatment that is offered by private veterinary clinics. We believe that the social impact of this initiative will be enormous. We are confident that the love people feel for their pets is independent of the social class to which they belong".
