Sustainable packaging and completely recyclable from plastic waste collected at sea. This is the idea of Ecover, a Belgian company that produces environmentally friendly cleaning products, based on vegetable and mineral ingredients, which wants to transform waste thrown into the sea thanks to a state of the art recycling system.

The company is working with Logoplaste, a manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging, to combine plastic collected from the sea with a recycled plastic and another made from sugarcane, called Plant-astic, which is 100% renewable, reusable and recyclable. The products packaged with the new material, Ecover assures, will be put on sale as early as next year.

“We will not have definitive figures of the quantity that will be recovered, we hope to extract as much as possible and give fishermen an incentive to join the initiative and help clean the seas. We want to use i waste from the sea in our packaging, this will depend on the quantity and quality of the plastic that can be fished ”, explains Philip Malmberg, Executive Director of Ecover. For now, some boats equipped with special equipment will be able to collect between two and eight tons of waste for each drop of the net, while other fishermen will collect plastic debris, separating it directly from their catch.

The tests to determine the exact mix of the three plastics that will make it possible to offer the new completely sustainable and recyclable material have already begun. Malmberg added: “Sustainability is a never-ending journey. Once one problem is solved, another will appear. We strive to push our efforts further and further. As producers we must take responsibility for sustainability very seriously, taking concrete action on climate change and the damage done by our excessive dependence on fossil fuels ". As if to say, it's okay to clean up the seabed, but above all we need to raise awareness in the industry.
