Biogas: energy from waste in the Cannicci landfill

On Saturday morning, at the Cannicci landfill, a biogas capture plant capable of producing electricity using the waste present in the same landfill, located in the Municipality of Civitella Paganico, in the Province of Grosseto, was inaugurated.

It was inaugurated yesterday morning, at the Cannicci landfill, for an biogas captation plant capable of producing electricity using i waste present in the same landfill, located in the Municipality of Civitella Paganico, in Province of Grosseto. Il biogas produced by the fermentation of the waste present in the landfill, through this plant, it will be captured, or rather, "aspirated" and purified to produce, subsequently, electricity and heat destined for domestic and production users located near the rubbish dump.

The power plant was built by the group Marco Polo Engineering SpA and by Tecnologie Ambientali srl and is therefore able to produce renewable energy precisely from waste, although the primary intent is to reduce emissions of biogas in the atmosphere, also as a result of the various controversies that engulfed the discrimination in recent years. Biogas, in fact, represents one of the gases responsible for the greenhouse effect and, therefore, for climate change, being composed mainly of methane, even 21 times more active than carbon dioxide for the same quantity, if indisciminately released into the atmosphere.

For this reason, the environmental legislation on the subject has provided for deadlines (albeit always extended) within which to decrease the disposal of biodegradable waste in landfills, but also provided for the mandatory biogas capture which is produced by the fermentation of these Rifiuti. However biogas, such as a Civitella Paganico, can become an interesting opportunity to produce clean, electrical and thermal energy and therefore combine two very important environmental needs, the reduction of emissions and the energy supply becoming, in short, a real source of green energy.

THECannicci biogas collection plant, which can be called a real one bioelectric power plant, went into operation last April. The testing phase was carried out in June and is currently in start-up phase, while the final implementation should take place within June 2010. In 2009 the plant produced 835.000kWh of energy through the recovery of approximately 500 thousand Nm3 (normal cubic meter) of biogas for a total amount, to date, of 1.258.615 kW of electricity through the recovery of approximately 777.732 Nm3 of biogas, which avoided the emission of 6.782 equivalent tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Estimates for the three-year period 2010-2012 indicate an increase in the production of electric energy for a total quantity of approx 12.000.000kWh recovering 7.500.000 Nm3 of biogas. Atmospheric emissions are well below the limits imposed by current legislation and are kept under control by a automatic monitoring system which continuously monitors the temperature and pressure of the gas and air mixture, ensuring compliance with the emission parameters required by law.

La Cannicci landfill it's the only one rubbish dump fully operational envisaged in the Grosseto area by the provincial waste plan, merged into the Upper South plan following the unification of the environmental territorial areas of Arezzo, Siena and Grosseto, as established by Tuscan regional law n.61 / 07.

Today Cannicci is used for the disposal of unsorted waste produced in most of the province. "The exploitation of biogas represents an important leap in quality for a plant that plays a strategic role in the management of waste at the provincial level" said the mayor of Civitella Paganico. Paolo Fratini. «That of Cannicci is, in fact - he added Frattini- a landfill in Piano, essential to avert the waste emergency in province of Grosseto».

«The energy recovery plant powered by biogas di Cannicci - declared the president of the province of Grosseto, Leonardo Marras- is a characteristic and important link of the system on which the province of Grosseto it is and will be engaged in these years. Biogas is only one “product” of the many that can derive from the intelligent use of waste »and he added that« The economy of the environment is a great, our new vocation and constitutes a social and industrial turning point ». «I thank the mayor Fratini - he continued - for having stood firm making this rubbish dump a model plant, managed according to criteria of high environmental efficiency. I want to underline that it is currently the only fully publicly owned plant, and that this plays a strategic role in the management of the integrated waste cycle. The role of institutions in a delicate sector such as that of waste, in fact, it remains central as an element of guarantee for the communities both in terms of planning and management, albeit integrated with private operators ».

At the inauguration of the centralize biogas the Tuscan regional councilor for the environment was also present Annarita Bramerini.
«Today - he underlined - is the first inauguration of a plant in which I participate in province of Grosseto. In recent years we have envisaged and planned a complex waste cycle treatment system which took too long to implement. Today we are finally in a position to accelerate and I hope that in a reasonably short period we will see the inauguration of new plants that will solve the problems in this province and in theAto southern Tuscany. The localization and authorization procedures of this type of structures are long and too often opposed in a preconceived way. In Toscana we produce 2,5 million tons of Rsu and 7,5 million tons of special waste every year. It is no longer possible to bury one's head in the sand or continue to export waste somewhere else. If the waste we all produce is properly treated, it can be transformed from a problem into an opportunity for development and work. The laws and guarantees for citizens exist and must be enforced in an uncompromising way, but the choices must be made. Avoiding resorting to shortcuts or simplifications ». Andrea Marchetti
