    Small results and some significant successes in terms of global protection of the biodiversity. At the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity) in North Korea, the situation of the Aichi biodiversity objectives (called Aichi target) to be achieved envisaged by the Nagoya Strategic Biodiversity Plan 2011-2020.

    The conclusions of the Global Biodiversity Outlook 4, the CBD summary report, which demonstrates that despite significant progress towards achieving the Aichi Target, Urgent, bold and innovative actions remain necessary by governments if they are to meet the commitments for the protection of biodiversity planned for 2011-2020.

    Achieving the Aichi Targets would significantly contribute to guaranteeing the predominant role of the biodiversity as a factor to be protected regardless because it is a fundamental component of the Earth system. The protection of biodiversity would make a substantial contribution to reduction of hunger and poverty, improvement of human health, but also to ensure a sustainable supply of energy, food and clean water. All the global priorities foreseen by the post-2015 development program.

    If you understand the role that the biodiversity, integrated with the objectives of Sustainable Development it could be brought to the center of political and decision-making debates as the main topic, which he also hopes Ban Ki-moon.

    “Responsible management of our planet's biodiversity” he also added Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Program (UNEP) “It is not only motivated by a common sense of responsibility towards future generations. The factors that push policy makers to safeguard biodiversity are always of an economic nature. Without healthy biodiversity, livelihoods, ecosystem services, habitat and food security will be compromised. "

    The progress made to date gives the possibility of believing that an end to biodiversity loss can be achieved, while at the same time achieving global goals relating to climate change, land degradation and sustainable development.

    In implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, although enormous progress has been made on the protected areas (increased by 17%) of the rgenetic resources (more accessible) and of national action plans (with biodiversity strategies targeted in individual states), further efforts are urgently needed to achieve the objectives set. In particular:

    - Halve the loss rate of all natural habitats, including forests;

    - Reduction of pollution, even from excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus which continue to pose a very significant threat to biodiversity and ecosystem services globally;

    - Reduction of multiple pressures on ecosystems vulnerable to climate change e ocean acidification, such as coral reefs;

    - prevent the extinction of threatened species and improve their conservation status because for birds, mammals, amphibians and corals there are no signs of improvement;

    - restore at least 15 percent of ecosystems, as despite conservation efforts there is still a net loss of forest;

    Nobody of the Aichi Target in fact be addressed individually as they are closely related. Therefore it is clear that the efforts must concern all the common objectives, otherwise there would be a risk of compromising their effectiveness and benefits.

    However, achieving common goals requires changes in society, as above all a better environmental awareness correlated to sustainable behaviors that involve less waste of natural resources and more moderate and reasoned consumer habits.
