    His latest work is now complete. It is a real one cathedral, which is hosted by the city of Christchurchin New Zealand. The cathedral is ready forinaugurazione. The first function will be celebrated inside the next August 11th. The structure serves to replace the Anglican church which was destroyed in February 2011, by a earthquake that had hit the city.

    The cardboard cathedral can hold up to 700 people. It is a very strong structure. In fact, it is expected that it will remain in perfect condition for the next 50 years, corresponding to the time necessary for the construction of a new masonry church.

    The Japanese architect is known for his projects suitable to replace in the world what is unfortunately razed to the ground by earthquakes. The main building material used by Shigeru Ban is recycled cardboard. It is a strategy that the architect considers useful for reducing waste and for facilitate reconstruction, at least provisionally, following an earthquake.

    Shigeru Ban uses cardboard for the construction of residential and commercial buildings, as well as public structures. Contrary to what one might think, thevisual impact of cardboard buildings is really stunning. It is enough to look at the images depicting the cathedral to understand it. The structure of the cathedral includes colored glasses, cardboard tubes e recycled containers which were used to obtain the chapels and spaces to be used as deposits and archives.
