Billy didn't make it: dead koala with badly burned legs saved from fires

Billy did not make it, the koala with badly burned legs from the fires died despite the care of the volunteers.

They had managed to save him from the fires and went out of their way to keep him alive, the volunteers from Adelaide & Hills Koala Rescue, but sadly Billy didn't make it. The burns on his paws were too severe and the stress from the fires probably contributed to his deterioration.

And so the koala which had conquered the whole world, recovered last month, and become somewhat of the symbol of the fundraiser of the Adelaide Wildlife Rescue Center, is now definitively gone, leaving a bad taste in the mouth of all those who they had cheered for him.

The news was shared on Instagram:

"Hello everybody. We have some very sad news to share with you all. Dear Billy hasn't come to the end of his recovery journey. He was doing so well, until one day no more. Early one morning, as the sun rose and the birds began to sing, he closed his beautiful eyes and went to sleep. The stress of his experience in the fire proved too difficult for his tiny body to heal. His caregivers are nursing broken hearts, but they take comfort in imagining him climbing that big rubber tree in the sky. Thank you so much for your love for him. Sleep well Billy, we miss you "

Users who followed his story were shocked by the loss. There are those who said they were heartbroken, those who defined his death as a very difficult reality to accept, those who congratulated the volunteers for their attempt to keep him alive despite severe burns.

Meanwhile, on GoFundMe, the Adelaide Koala Rescue continues to raise money to help volunteers, veterinarians and the Fire Service, who care for animals in Australia. And we too can make a small or large contribution to make a difference. Only thanks to solidarity, these volunteers will be able to continue to care for injured animals.
