There is no doubt that they are underestimated animals, yet and polyps they are super intelligent animals that often engage in surprising behaviors.

Just think of the escape of Inky, the octopus that a few days ago in the middle of the night, lifted the lid from the tank of the aquarium in Napier in New Zealand where it lived, reached the floor and slipped into a drain pipe. Fifty meters of path and then off towards the sea and towards freedom.

Octopuses use coconuts as mobile hiding places

There is even a species of octopus nicknamed "Coconut octopus". It is the Amphioctopus marginatus discovered in 1964, which it uses the shells of the walnuts found at the bottom of the sea to hide from predators. As we see in this video it is a great display of cunning.

Octopuses have ingenious hunting strategies

Each species adopts its own strategy to catch prey, some simply jump or chase it, others like the most large Pacific striped octopus has a different approach. First it identifies the prey, then it teases it with the tentacles and finally it captures it.

Octopuses can hatch eggs for years

Most octopuses hatch their eggs for a few weeks and die shortly thereafter, but the species Graneledone boreopacifica managed to set a record: a female hatched for four and a half years. The discovery was made by the researcher Bruce Robison and his team. The behavior of the octopus was analyzed for the entire duration of the hatching.

Octopuses have a social life

Octopuses are usually solitary creatures, but the biologist Aradio Rodaniche documented that in the Pacific some of these animals live in groups of forty. In this funny video it seems that two octopuses are even getting each other kissing.

5) Octopuses can take the form of sea snakes

If they can't hide in the rocks, they strive and transform to escape predators. There are at least 15 different species of octopuses that camouflage themselves in sea snakes, poisonous marine fish and even jellyfish.
