Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, sanitizing and disinfectant products they have entered overwhelmingly into our daily life. The protective effects of these products against the virus are undeniable, but we must not forget that they are still chemicals which, in the long run, can have negative consequences for health, especially for the most fragile people or small children.

A new study conducted in Japan examined the effects of the use of disinfectants by pregnant women, to verify if there was a link between these products and the development of allergic diseases such as asthma, eczema or food intolerances in future unborn children.

To do this, the researchers collected data on the health status of nearly 79.000 mother / child couples born between January 2011 and March 2014. The associations between the possible use of disinfectants by expectant mothers during pregnancy and the appearance of allergic diseases in children up to three years.

Compared to women who did not use disinfectants during pregnancy, mothers who used these products have a significantly higher risk of their child experiencing more or less severe forms of asthma or eczema (up to 26% more than other mothers); on the contrary, the use of disinfectants by mothers does not seem to be connected to the onset of food allergies or intolerances.

For now, this is an observational study that has not investigated the correlation from a clinical point of view, however it can already be a valid reflection tool on its own to make us understand that the exposure of the fetus to disinfectants (as indeed also to other chemical substances) may already be sufficient in itself to cause even serious pathologies in the unborn child.

This study refers to data collected just under a decade ago, well before the Coronavirus epidemic. If we consider the enormous diffusion that disinfectant products have had after the outbreak of the health emergency (even in our loved ones), the results achieved by the researchers are even more current.
