Beware of ticks! They are very adept at hiding. Always check also in the mouth of your four-legged friends

Ticks are dangerous parasites for our pets and very good at hiding, even between the teeth and gums of dogs and cats

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Ticks represent a great threat to our four-legged friends and, with the arrival of summer, it is more common to find them on our dogs and cats. These are parasites not always visible to the naked eye and extremely skilled in hiding in the fur of animals, able to position themselves in strategic points, where it is easier to suck their blood.

Finding them is not always easy, indeed. They also often hide in the gums and teeth of our dogs. This is why it is essential to remember to always take a look in the mouth too. The bite of ticks can carry serious diseases, unfortunately even lethal and, in some cases, can also be dangerous for humans.

How to recognize ticks

There are hundreds of tick species in the world but they usually have common characteristics. The larvae of ticks, nymphs and adult ticks are all capable of biting and, therefore, dangerous but differ in certain respects:

  • The larvae are the size of a grain of sand and look like red or black dots
  • Nymphs are somewhat larger than larvae (about the size of a sesame seed)
  • Fasting adult ticks are about the size of a crushed apple seed and are usually brown in color, with a darker area around the mouth, while after a meal they are considerably larger than fasted ticks and measure about 1 cm.

How to find ticks in cats and dogs

Regularly checking your pet, especially in the summer, is very important to identify the presence of these dangerous parasites. There are some strategic points preferred by ticks:

  • The neck and ears
  • The paws (especially between the toes)
  • The head and the muzzle
  • Tail
  • The groin area and the perianal area
  • The mouth (gums and teeth are often overlooked, but ticks also lurk there)

You aren't alone… most people never even look inside their dog or cat's mouth to see if there are any problems. With…
