Bayer will no longer sell herbicides containing glyphosate in US stores starting January 2023. The announcement came a few days ago and comes as the company grapples with approx 30 thousand reports who accuse glyphosate-based products of causing cancer in those who have used them.

According to the Center for Food Safety it is one victory for consumers and the environment, but glyphosate should still be banned for all uses, not just home use.

Bayer's decision to end Roundup's residential sale in the US is a historic victory for public health and the environment. However, large-scale agricultural use of this toxic pesticide continues and our agricultural workers remain at risk. It is time for the EPA to take action and ban all-use glyphosate, ”Andrew Kimbrell, director of the Center for Food Safety, said in a press release.

Il glyphosate has long been a controversial ingredient to say the least, because it has been linked to the development of several diseases. The World Health Organization considers it "probably carcinogenic to humans", but the EPA - the United States Environmental Protection Agency - ruled during the Trump government that the substance does not represent a danger to the human health. Now, with Biden in power, things may change, but glyphosate has not yet been withdrawn from the market for the time being.

Bayer's recent decision only concerns the Retail and it is the company itself that explains the motivations which led her to withdraw the glyphosate products:

“This move was made solely to manage the risk of litigation and not for security concerns. Since the vast majority of complaints come from users in the residential market, this action largely eliminates the primary source of future complaints, ”reads the statement released by Bayer.

For the company, therefore, no security problems, but only the need for prevent further lawsuits after the thousands already faced, which have cost it over $ 10 billion since it acquired Monsanto in 2018.
