Farmers of the Liguria, an exceptional place where it is cultivated basil and the famous is made pesto, are having a really hard time because of a fungo killer which is seriously jeopardizing the cultivation of this much loved aromatic herb.

Il mushroom, of African origin, has actually been there for several years and has managed to become over time resistant to even the strongest products used by growers to protect seedlings. Here then has come to the point of having to ask the Ministry of Health, with the support of the Liguria Region, to be able to use different and stronger products to deal with the epidemic of the much feared fungus.

There is a lot of concern, explained Giovanni Barbagallo, regional councilor for agriculture: "This is a serious problem we are dealing with, the Region is alongside the growers so that the Ministry undertakes to promptly approve a range of pesticides. able to eradicate the fungus that has been present in our crops for almost 10 years and which now tends to be resistant to the few pesticides already approved in recent years ".

The risk is to lose a large part of the crop this year, resulting in company closures and job losses. The problem, among other things, does not only concern Liguria but also regions such as Lazio, Campania, Emilia Romagna and Veneto where there are important basil crops. The turnover in Liguria alone is around 15 million euros every year.
