This time, Banksy's new mural is a form of protest against the imprisonment of Turkish artist and journalist Zehra Dogan, sentenced last March for painting the destruction of a Turkish city, with the country's flag flying through the rubble.

Between Houston Street and Bowery, in Manhattan, 20 meters of wall enclose the latest extraordinary work of the street artist whose identity continues to remain hidden. The photo of the work was shared by Banksy himself, with the hashtag “Free Zehra Dogan”.

The artist's face is drawn behind bars and one of them is in the shape of a pencil. Zehra was condemned for having painted the destruction of Nusaybin, her hometown that rises right on the Kurdish borders, by the militias of the Turkish state. Activist and director of a feminist news agency, Dogan still faces 18 months in prison.

Around the artist there are instead many notches, those that usually draw the inmates who count the days spent in prison.

Notches that weigh on the conscience of those who want to gag freedom of expression.

“I'm very sorry for her. You've painted things much more worthy of a prison sentence, ”Banksy said.

This is the painting that cost Dogan his prison:

One year ago Zehra Dogan was jailed for painting this watercolour of a photograph she saw in the newspaper. Protest against this injustice by re-gramming her painting and tagging Turkey’s President Erdogan @rterdogan #FREEzehradogan

Banksy is a unique artist, loved all over the world for her ability to deliver powerful messages that capture the attention of the general public, not just the art lover. The work was created in collaboration with the artist Borf, who also spent a period in prison because of his murals.
