Seventeen people were killed in Bangladesh during a thunderstorm, struck by lightning while attending a wedding reception.

Le victims they were on the banks of the Padma River, the main tributary of the Ganges, in the Chapai Nawabganj district, when they were surprised by a violent and sudden storm. The couple managed to find shelter, but for the seventeen guests - including some children - there was no escape when the lightning struck them.

Bangladesh's Department of Environmental Disaster Management said there has been a dangerous increase in the number of lightning and the number of victims. According to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, from 2011 to 2016 in Bangladesh 1.400 people died due to lightning.

This led the Ministry to include lightning in the list of national disasters in May 2016. To try to prevent accidents and fatalities, lightning detection sensors were also installed on an experimental basis in eight of the places most at risk. Unfortunately, however, these are still insufficient measures.
