AWA, the Peruvian soap that cleans rivers while washing clothes

The formula of this eco-friendly soap was donated to ensure that its use is extended and the rivers of the world are cleaned.

Is it possible to wash clothes in a river without polluting it? With this eco-friendly soap you not only not pollute it, but clean it. Its formula was donated to ensure that its use is extended and the tributaries of the world are cleaned up.

According to UN data, one in three people do not have access to clean water and 159 million people depend on surface waters such as rivers, lakes or streams. For this reason, washing clothes on the banks of rivers is still a very popular activity in various parts of the world. In addition, for some Peruvian communities, this also represents a tradition dating back to the Incas, used to socialize with people from other villages.

Unfortunately, the soap currently used by these communities to wash their clothes contributes to the pollution of the rivers which, when ingested, in turn cause various diseases or infections. However, it is not only the people that are at risk, but also the flora and fauna of these areas.

Faced with this scenario, the Peruvian mineral water company Andea, together with its creative agency Fahrenheit DDB, decided to transform this ancient tradition, using a systematic and autonomous decontamination network, from a pollutant to its opposite.

After two years of research carried out in collaboration with Cirsys, a local start-up that seeks technological solutions for social development, they managed to find a microorganism with a probiotic function able to feed on the pollutants of the river. This is how AWA was born, a soap that, thanks to the presence of these microorganisms, improves the quality of river water by up to 75% when washing clothes.

How does it work? During the natural washing process, the soap, without altering the pH of the water, releases particles which, falling and adhering to the stones and algae, drastically lower the level of some components guilty of the proliferation of bacteria, such as nitrites, nitrates, ammonia and ammonium. In this way it allows the purification of the river even a few moments after washing.

The AWA Project was carried out in Huacahuasi, a village near Cusco. In fact, this is the community - whose traditional river washing was putting people's health and water quality at risk - chosen to verify its effectiveness. Now the formula has been made freely accessible in order to extend the use of this soap wherever it is needed.

“The formula is available for free, this project has no boundaries and we are willing to donate it to anyone who wants to use it anywhere in the world,” Ricardo Chadwick of the Fahrenheit DDB agency tells us.

Through a form available on the project website, Andea very generously made the AWA formula available to governments, non-profit organizations, social enterprises and soap producers, so that they can use it to get this product into hands and rivers. where these ancient traditions are still carried on. A sustainable gesture in favor of the environment and humanity!
