    Avocado. An exotic fruit that lately is starting to be cultivated also in our country (especially in Sicily and Calabria) and this is a fortune given its so many beneficial properties. Now a new American study has highlighted how avocado can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease thanks to its content of monounsaturated fatty acids (i so-called good fats).

    The research, conducted by Pennsylvania State University and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, aimed to compare the effects of different types of diets on cholesterol. The sample of 45 patients (between 21 and 70 years obese or overweight) followed the usual American-style diet for two weeks, then for the following 5 weeks, instead, the participants were divided into 3 groups: the first followed a low-fat diet while the second and the third a moderate fat consumption, the difference was however that one of the two one avocado (Hass variety) was given per day.

    The result amazed the researchers themselves: those who ate avocado had achieved a reduction in LDL (bad) cholesterol of 13,5mg / dl, the other group following a moderate fat diet of 8,3 mg / dl while the first group (low fat diet) only 7,4 mg / dl. All very clear therefore so much that Penny M. Kris-Etherton, at the head of the study stated:

    “This shows that the intake of monounsaturated fatty acids provided by avocados can drastically drop the bad cholesterol".

    It is therefore advisable to eat it more often, preparing a nice guacamole, but also learning how to add it more often to salads, with other seasonal vegetables or in the filling of sandwiches.
