Autism and the gut: link found between autism spectrum disorders and gut microbiota

Gut microbiota could be linked to autism spectrum disorders, according to a new review

Gut, second brain: according to a new review, the gut microbiota could be linked to autism spectrum disorders

La review identified as the intestinal microbiota, i.e. the trillions of microorganisms that live within the human digestive system, can play critical roles in the modulation of brain functions, social behaviors and autistic symptoms. (Read also: Autism, more common in children than previously thought. The largest study ever done)

The research summarizes current knowledge on the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota, metabolic substances and the brain communicate to influence behaviors, including the different social communication patterns, that characterize autism. (Read also: Gut second brain: why?)

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea have been reported in 46-84% of autistic people, giving rise to a hypothesis that the Bowel dysregulation may be particularly prevalent in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

To date, most autism studies look only at the brain and behavior, or the gut microbiome and behavior; instead, this new study examines, for the first time, all three factors together: brain, gut and behavior. Furthermore, the research team has identified a connection between these factors, although scientists have yet to determine the exact one microbial composition associated with autism

Therefore, further more specific studies are needed to establish this relationship; these will have to include more standardized collection and analysis, as well as research to arrive at to study the prenatal gut microbiome in pregnant mothers, but also to compare the microbiomes of autistic and typically developing populations and longitudinal monitoring of metabolic states, and specific biomarkers through early childhood development.
