THEAustria seems to be destined to become the first country in the European Union to ban glyphosate, after the green light from the European Commission.

The Austrian Parliament had voted for a total ban on the use of the controversial herbicide throughout the national territory starting from 1 January 2020, but before the legislation could enter into force it was necessary to await the opinion of the European Commission.

The European Union had time until November 29th this year to decide whether Austrian law was compliant with EU rules and there was a fear that it would prevent the ban from taking effect due to pressure from multinational Bayer-Monsanto.

La European Commission however, it did not prevent the implementation of the new legislation e she merely sent a letter to the Austrian government, in which he criticized the way in which the ban was introduced by raising the possibility of opening an infringement procedure against Austria.

After such criticisms, the Austrian Ministry of the Environment raised doubts about the entry into force of the ban, but Greenpeace stressed that these are only comments and that no detailed opinion was provided: in fact the Commission has not formally vetoed to the prohibition of the use of glyphosate and has not taken any measures to block the entry into force of the law, therefore glyphosate should be banned as foreseen starting from 1 January next.

Il glyphosate it was classified as “probably carcinogenic” by the World Health Organization, but in December 2017 the European Union nevertheless renewed the authorization for the use of glyphosate-based herbicides throughout Europe until 2022.

Supporters of the ban hope that after the ban goes into effect in Austria, other European countries decide to ban glyphosate to protect citizens and the environment from the damage caused by this dangerous herbicide.
