The Atacama Desert in Chile, considered the driest in the world, has returned to bloom. The last flowering dates back to 2017

One of the driest scenarios in the world, that of the Atacama desert (in Chile), has flourished and is colored as it hasn't been for years.

Many colorful flowers of different species have covered the Atacama desert, a generally very arid place (the maximum temperature easily reaches 40 degrees) giving a wonderful spectacle.

And the thing is even more incredible considering that, only recently, at the end of August the desert was completely covered with snow.

The flowering of this desert is very rare and, on average, takes place every 3/4 years. The last time the Atacama Desert blossomed was 2017 when an area even larger than that of 2020 appeared covered with colorful flowers.

According to National Forestry Corporation of Chile (CONAF), which also published photos of the new flowering, the phenomenon is concentrated this time mainly in the provinces of Huasco and Freirina, which are located in the desert region.

The peak of flowering was in September but even now the colors offer an extraordinary spectacle that is expected until about mid-October when the desert will become desert again.

All this is possible thanks to the rain that allows over 200 species to flourish and thrive. An important moment that also has a very positive impact on wild animals, livestock and the local population as it attracts many tourists.

This year, however, it was asked to avoid visits to limit possible infections from Covid-19 but also and above all to preserve the natural environment.
