At least 28 people, mostly women, died of electrocution in Tangier, in a clandestine textile factory set up in a basement.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

At least 28 people died of electrocution in a clandestine textile factory in Tangier, in the Branes II district. The workshop, in which 40 workers worked, had been set up in the basement of a private house, which was flooded due to the flood last Monday, causing the electrocution of the workers, mostly women. We don't know what they were producing and for which brands, but Morocco is certainly the last frontier of fashion produced below cost on the shoulders of female workers and these are the conditions in which they work to produce our clothes.

News of the drama sparked a wave of indignation in Morocco. To shed light on the causes and responsibilities of the accident, the local authorities have opened an investigation, but it is already clear that the illegal factory did not meet the minimum safety standards.

But this, unfortunately, is only the umpteenth tragedy of this type that marks the country and, above all, that could have been avoided. The textile sector represents the first source of employment in the country, but most of the workers are forced to work in the slums of the cities and in confined spaces.

According to a study published in 2018 by the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM), over half of the textile workers work illegally, in unacceptable conditions and receive a salary that in most cases is lower than the legal minimum, equal to 250 euros.

And in periods of heavy rain, such as those that have occurred in recent days, the situation becomes complicated for those who work in the basements. In fact, in Morocco, due to the lack of an adequate urban drainage system, floods often claim victims. And it is often the poorest citizens who lose their lives, forced to work and live in unsafe places like clandestine improvised factories in sad basements.

But these victims are not in the news.
