Arianna arrives in Milan, the first balcony vase that measures smog and unites citizens in the fight against pollution

Arianna is the first hi-tech vase capable of monitoring the level of smog in Milan created by five young engineers from the Polytechnic.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

A hi-tech vase capable of monitoring the level of smog: it is Arianna, a sui generis container which, placed on the balcony as a simple decorative object, captures the quality of the air and sends the collected data to the home WiFi. The aim is to map the pollution in the city and look for concrete solutions.

Presented as "the first vessel that unites citizens in the fight against pollution", Arianna was born from the fervent mind of 5 young engineers and designers of the Politecnico di Milano who started from an assumption: in Milan the control units that measure PM2.5 particulate matter , one of the most dangerous pollutants for human health, there are only two, how can we tackle the great problem of pollution in Milan with so little data?

Here is the solution! A simple vase to be placed on the balcony or terrace of the house and which, among geraniums and aromatic herbs, will be able to unite the citizens of Milan in the fight against urban pollution.

Thanks to an innovative technology, the device is equipped with special holes to suck in the air and a solar panel (which allows it to be completely autonomous, without the need to use electricity for recharging) is able to measure the air quality at the point where it is located and to send this data to the home WiFi. In this way, the data collected by all the Arianne around Milan will create some hyper-detailed and real-time maps of air quality that can be consulted at any time through the app that the same engineers have developed.

Objective of the project, for the realization of which a crowdfunding campaign on the Produzioni dal Basso platform, is to unite the Milanese citizens in the fight against urban pollution, thanks to the help of technology. Any supporter who decides to order a vase of his own will become a real "node" of the network, helping to map the smog in the city.

The crowdfunding campaign is carried out with the collaboration and support of BCC Milano, which will join the Milanese citizens by doubling the donations: for each vase ordered by the supporters, the cooperative bank will deliver another to a school or an association in the territory of the Metropolitan City, with the aim of making families and young people aware of the issues of active citizenship and the fight against air pollution.

A community of thousands of Milanese citizens has gathered around Arianna, the Milano Aria Pulita, of which one can become a part by helping to find the most effective solutions to reduce pollution, on the basis of objective and representative data; give every citizen the right to know what air they are breathing, anywhere and at any time; spreading a new culture of living well in the city: a real “movement for clean air”.

“We want to spread 200 Arianna around Milan, of which about 100 will be placed in schools”, the young boys conclude. And here's how to contribute:

The modalities of participation in the project are divided into two main categories:

Pioneers - Ariadne in the Schools

The pioneers are all those who believe in the project and who want to contribute to the mapping of the city of Milan. All the money donated by the pioneers will be used for the construction of Arianne which will then be distributed in the schools of Milan, activating real awareness workshops in the classrooms. Each pioneer can name a school where he wants air to be monitored.

Ambassador - Arianna on your balcony

Ambassadors are particularly virtuous citizens who want to become real protagonists of the project. With a higher donation than the pioneers, they receive an Ariadne to be placed on their balcony. They will be the real engine of the project, becoming an integral part of one of the largest urban transformations ever implemented by the city of Milan.

The pots will be distributed at the beginning of 2020. So do your best, Milanese, clean air needs you!
