Area C: how is it going?

Area C has been in force since yesterday, Monday, January 16, in Milan and citizens have made sure to adapt as much as possible to the rules of the new municipal provision, aimed at reducing traffic and air pollution in the city center. Of the two main objectives, however, only one has been achieved at the moment. If the number of cars in circulation within the Cerchia dei Bastioni appeared, between yesterday and today, drastically decreased, unfortunately the pm10 levels are not.

Area C has been in force since yesterday, Monday, January 16, in Milan and citizens have made sure to adapt as much as possible to the rules of the new municipal provision, aimed at reducing traffic and air pollution in the city center. Of the two main objectives, however, only one has been achieved at the moment. If the number of cars in circulation within the Cerchia dei Bastioni has appeared, between yesterday and today, drastically decreased, unfortunately the levels of pm10 are not.

In some of the areas affected by the traffic block for i more polluting vehicles in fact, values of pm10 were recorded even higher than those of last Sunday, when the provision had not yet entered into force. As if that were not enough, the concentrations of fine dust present in Area C would be higher than those of areas outside it, not affected by the provision. In the very central via Senate a very high value of pm10 would have been recorded, equal to 106 mg/mc. Outside of Area C, in the area of City Studies, the detected pm10 level would be unexpectedly lower, with a value of 101 mg/mc.

While the expected and hoped-for benefits regarding air quality have not yet been identified, it is not possible to deny that a reduction in traffic has actually occurred. According to the data collected by the Municipality of Milan, this morning the traffic recorded was found lower than 32,1% compared to last Tuesday, thanks to the drastic decrease in vehicles who entered the Cerchia dei Bastioni, 17433 less compared to a week ago.

Citizens and all those who reach the Lombard capital every day for study and work reasons have reacted to the provision by anticipating their entry into Area C, so as not to have to pay the new ticket, or have fallen back on By public transport. By providing for a greater number of accesses to subways and buses, the Municipality is committed to enhancing the efficiency of the three lines of the subway, For a total of 25 additional rides, which would have guaranteed about 25 more places. Between subway, bus and tram, the extra rides, organized in anticipation of an increase in the flow of passengers, were in total 275. Then there are those who preferred the bike sharing, for which a increase of 10% than the average of use during the winter.

Unfortunately, some are not missing hardships for commuters. THE parking lots of the major access stops to the subway were very crowded since the morning, especially in the case of key points such as Maciachini and Lampugnano. To facilitate the access and disembarkation of passengers to the convoys, the Municipality has ordered the presence of special employees at the main stops, including Bisceglie, Porta Genova, Centrale and Duomo.

Lo discontent of motorists Compared to the new provision, it has manifested itself through a sharp increase in the number of parking spaces carried out directly behind the central area, mostly in areas where parking is prohibited, including driveways. Palazzo Marino declared that it has already begun to tackle the problem of wild parking lots thanks to the action of the traffic police and traffic auxiliaries. Lastly, unfortunately, they are not lacking lunge code for the registration of residents in Area C at the appropriate office, located in Piazza Duomo, in front of which hundreds of citizens have gathered since the early morning and whose work has unfortunately been slowed down by computer problems.
