They had found it in very serious conditions, towing a bicycle rim and entangled in many meters of fishing line. But how is there today tartaruga Aphrodite? Many are writing to us to ask for news about her, rescued on March 17 in Pellaro (RC) by CRTM Brancaleone.
Well, the good news is that she is alive, even if the movement and use of the front fins were immediately compromised, unfortunately already gangrenous at the time of the discovery.
The left fin was amputated on March 28, while now efforts are being made, day after day, to save what remains of its right fin.
“Thanks to the veterinary specialists of the Sea Turtle Clinic (Uniba), headed by Prof. Di Bello, every day the whole area of necrosis is monitored and cleaned in the hope of finding living tissue and therefore blood circulation. Only in that case could the right limb be saved ”, explain from the center.
However, Aphrodite's problem is not just the fins. Her general conditions at the moment, remain very serious and unfortunately the turtle is not yet out of danger of life.
Aphrodite, however, is alive and struggles to overcome the agony that lasted months and months at sea, a period in which she could not feed herself due to the waste that had blocked her body.
We continue to hope and cross our fingers for her, without forgetting that Aphrodite is not the only turtle found in these conditions.
