Anxiety: Will the new therapies be oxytocin-based?

According to new research, a simple blood sample is enough to understand if you have low levels of oxytocin in the body and therefore you can be prone to anxiety attacks.

You suffer from anxiety? Perhaps your problem is due to an imbalance of theoxytocin, hormone of serenity, love and pleasure. To say it is a new American research that has highlighted how too low levels of oxytocin can cause anxiety and panic attacks.

Scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine, who saw their study published in Molecular Psychiatry, sampled 27 volunteers (ages 4 to 64) selected from a group of people who needed lumbar punctures for medical reasons. . The researchers tested the levels of oxytocin in the cerebrospinal fluid obtained during lumbar puncture, they simultaneously collected blood samples and had them fill out a questionnaire on participants' anxiety levels.

According to the results obtained, it would be sufficient to undergo a simple blood test to understand what is the level of oxytocin present in the body and in this way assess whether this could be the reason for one's anxiety. This system currently involves only one blood sampling unlike in the past when, on the other hand, to monitor the levels of oxytocin in the body it was necessary to take some cerebrospinal fluid. The team was therefore very satisfied with the results obtained also because it is the first time that a research proves that ad a lower concentration of oxytocin corresponds to a greater state of anxiety.

As stated Karen Parker, from the research team: “This hormone could soon become a biomarker for anxiety. Not only that, precisely because it is present in low quantities, the administration of oxytocin could become a possible new therapy ". Of course I'm first new and more in-depth research is needed.
