An endless and absurd amount of plastic packaging for a single pair of shoes: a report from a reader

One of our readers told us about the impact of online shopping on the environment: packages arrive loaded with packaging

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Let's face it, buying online is convenient and especially during the lockdown period the number of people who bought food, accessories, clothing has skyrocketed. But the other side of the coin is plastic pollution: inside the packages there are in fact infinite (and often useless and exaggerated) packaging that certainly does not do the environment good.

If many supermarkets have now adopted a less impactful philosophy, for example by choosing paper bags instead of bioplastic, the same cannot be said of e-commerce companies.

For example, one of our readers sent us these images. She bought some shoes on Zalando and the package she was delivered is as follows:

Centimeters and centimeters of plastic material that, if not properly disposed of, ends up in our oceans, destroying the marine ecosystem and suffocating birds and fish.

Unfortunately, the problem is certainly not only of Zalando, but also of Amazon and numerous other e-commerce. Even online supermarket shopping comes in endless quantities of plastic.

Finally, considering the difficulty with which the different parts of the packaging are recycled, because it is made up of different materials, the package ordered online can cause the emission of 180 kg of CO2, compared to 11 kg of the traditional bag taken in the store. .

We thank our reader for this report, hoping that all companies can become more sensitive to this issue. For now, the only solution, unfortunately, is to avoid this kind of not very green and unethical purchases ...
