Amazon withdraws whale and dolphin meat products from sale

Amazon, an online commerce giant, has decided to withdraw from the sale the 147 products based on whales, dolphins and other cetaceans, all endangered species, which were showing off on the Japanese portal. All thanks to an awareness campaign implemented by a European NGO, the EIA, which, as you will recall, in a report published on 21 February last denounced the contribution of the e-commerce site to the trade of whale meat and food products containing derivatives of endangered marine mammals. But also thanks to the pro-whale petition launched by the animalist Melissa Sehgal, currently engaged in Japan as a Cove Guardian of the Taiji dolphins.

Amazon, the online commerce giant, has decided to withdraw 147 products based on whales, dolphins and other cetaceans from sale, all endangered species, which made a good view of themselves on the Japanese portal. All thanks to one awareness campaign implemented by a European NGO, the EIA, which, as you will recall, in a report published on 21 February last denounced the contribution of the e-commerce site to the trade of whale meat and food products containing derivatives of endangered marine mammals. But also thanks to the pro-whale petition launched by the animalist Melissa Sehgal, currently engaged in Japan as Taiji Dolphin Cove Guardian.

The results were striking. In a few days the petition on Change.org has collected more than 191,506 subscriptions Worldwide. Melissa writes: “In just a few weeks in Taiji, Japan, I witnessed unimaginable cruelty and bloodshed. The Cove movie is terrifying, and even if I have been here before, I would never have been fully ready to see what I have witnessed: the slaughter and mutilation of hundreds of dolphins ”. Also thanks to these words, animal rights activists from all over the world are hurled against the American colossus, spreading the news on blogs and social networks, leaving indignant messages to the company, signing the petition en masse.

Thanks to their commitment, Amazon has been forced to comply with its own policy which provides for the ban on marketing products derived from this type of animal. But it is still too early to say victory and the environmental association wants to move forward. “We are pleased with Amazon's decision to remove whale products from its Japanese portal. But now we strongly demand that products containing dolphin and porpoise meat be banned all over the world ", explains Clare Parry of EIA and the campaign must not stop there, as stated on the EIA website: animal rights activists do not they will give up “until Amazon gives a formal commitment to ban these products".

And even Melissa's letter, which flanks the petition on Change.org, is in the same vein: “On February 22, Amazon.com responded to consumer pressure and removed dolphin, porpoise and whale meat from its online store. -line, ”explains the dolphin keeper,“ but has not yet adopted a clear policy that she will never sell these items again. Quietly removing products from their site is not enough. It is time for Amazon.com to introduce a permanent ban on the meat of whales, dolphins, porpoises ”. Also because if the largest online store decided to act, it would give a very strong message to the whole world.

What to do? We can all contribute to making this happen by signing the petition, sharing the EIA campaign on social networks, writing a protest email to Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos at jeff@amazon.com (here a draft in English of the text to be sent). Because 200.000 people, or even more, they are really hard to ignore!
