By now several scientific researches have shown how a 'proper nutrition may help prevent even a degenerative disease as widespread and feared as Alzheimer's. According to the latest data, among other things, one would encourage the appearance of this pathology imbalance in the metabolism of copper, a metal found in some foods.

These topics were discussed in a meeting held in Rome by experts in the field of the Fatebenefratelli hospital on the Tiberina Island and by the Neurology Institute of the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic. From what emerged, as reported by a study conducted by the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, one diet high in copper, saturated and trans-unsaturated fats fa increase cognitive decline and aging increasing it by 19 years.

On the role of the copper like risk factor for Alzheimer's Rosanna Squitti, from Fatebenefratelli, spoke: "Non-ceruloplasmin copper (also called" free "or" toxic "), which arises from an altered metabolism of copper and which our organism is unable to eliminate, in some predisposed people, is a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, once the presence of high levels of this metal in the blood has been ascertained, through a patented test (C4D), now available, it is possible to intervene with a specific diet ".

What excludes and what this includes diet? From avoid all foods that contain high levels of copper, for example liver, seafood and mussels, but also foods rich in saturated fats (for example red meat) favoring instead a plant-based diet rich in fruits and vegetables. It is important to take a good dose of Vitamin E, present in green leafy vegetables but also in seeds, and of Vitamin B12. If you then take vitamin and / or mineral salts supplements, it is very important to make sure that they do not contain copper or iron.

However, the advice of the experts is to be followed by a doctor who will be able to indicate the correct diet for each specific situation. Finally, we must not forget that it is important practice moderate but regular physical activity, as Dr. Squitti pointed out, at least two hours of sport per week are needed.
