How to use the roots of the altea, perennial herb of the Malvaceae family from which the famous mashmallows are also obtained. With soothing, emollient and protective properties, this medicinal plant is marvelous in the treatment of all forms of inflammation and an excellent remedy for the treatment of respiratory tract disorders such as coughs and colds. And you can also find it in our garden.

The warm season gives us a riot of flowers and plants that bloom in a rainbow of colors. One of the most beautiful is undoubtedly the marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis), adorned with colorful heart-shaped petals. Its particular beauty has meant that it has been admired since ancient times and that it was attributed, with good reason, almost miraculous powers.

Her godmother is none other than Venus, goddess of love. And in fact our ancestors used the marshmallow to heal ailments of the reproductive system, skin and bladder. Over the centuries, its roots have been the protagonists of various healing recipes: rich in mucilage, they boast a high decongestant, emollient, laxative and calming power. But there is also another detail that makes them special.

Not everyone knows that delicious and very soft sweets derive from the marshmallow root: marshmallows! That's right: French cooks made marshmallows by beating the juice of this root by hand!

Today this tradition has been replaced by more modern techniques and more commercial ingredients, but the healing / cosmetic use of the seedling is still recognized.

The altea, like the mallow, grows spontaneously in the meadows, in the countryside and in the gardens and blooms in summer. You can then collect it, dry the roots and grind them in a mortar, or buy it ready-made in a herbalist's shop.
