All the uses of basalt fiber for high-performance insulation and energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is increasingly required to optimize costs and protect the environment. Optimizing environments thermally is one of the challenges of the contemporary world aimed at protecting our planet and saving energy.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Today more than ever we are looking for increasingly eco-sustainable and high-performance formulas and materials to control heat loss and for fire safety.

An innovative material that can be used effectively as an insulator is basalt fiber, a rock of volcanic origin characterized by dark or black color containing silica. With a diameter between 9 and 13 µm, the basalt fibers are excellent thermal and acoustic insulators, while maintaining the mechanical properties at high and very low temperatures.

Precisely on the basalt fiber was born GEOSAFE®, initially conceived for the naval sector (as part of the 'Navaltex' project, first nationally then financed by the Piedmont Region with the support of the Textile Innovation Center born in Città Studi).

GEOSAFE® is present on the market of thermal and acoustic insulation materials, with particular specificities for thermal: it is in fact class A1 material or completely fireproof material. Recent estimates indicate that if all companies insulated heat losses the impact on the climate would improve by 3% on the whole planet, safeguarding from overheating phenomena.

GEOSAFE® in the naval sector

the basalt fiber of which GEOSAFE® is composed has in fact many other applications that make it particularly effective for companies. For example in the naval sector, the sector where GEOSAFE® was actually born. In the naval sector, the choice of light and not very voluminous materials is the basis for the design of a competitive product and Geosafe guarantees excellent insulation, reducing overall dimensions. The most frequent uses are for fire doors, engine room insulation, flame potential parts insulation, bulkhead protection.

GEOSAFE® for the industrial sector

This material is widely used in the industrial sector for the insulation of valves, pumps and turbines, and above all as an insulating material, also excellent for many other insulations where required: boilers, flues, machinery that develop heat and can trigger fires.

The materials used as thermal insulation

To thermally insulate it is possible to use different materials, all with their own technical characteristics, including:

  • mineral wool
  • Wood fiber
  • cork
  • mineral foams
  • sintered expanded polystyrene (EPS)
  • extruded polystyrene (XPS)
  • polyurethane
  • Airgel panels

The choice depends on many personal factors and sensitivities, as well as on financial availability.

GEOSAFE® is highly insulating and above all fire resistant (Class A1), it is able to replace the thermal insulation products currently on the market, especially where temperatures are very high or very low (range -260 ° C +750 ° C certificates).

It is also extremely light (1830 g / m10 for a thickness of XNUMX mm) and flexible, adapting perfectly to all surfaces, even those that are not flat, and is ideal for covering parts with strong heat dispersion.

Furthermore, the product is an inert and completely regenerable, therefore particularly eco-friendly.
