THEalder is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and Africa, belonging to the Cruciferae family. Perfect for growing in the garden, for borders of flower beds and edges of paths and rocky areas, but also in pots to enrich the terrace or balcony.

Alisso: origin and characteristics

The generic name Alyssum derives from the Greek and means "without anger", because the plant in the past was used as natural remedy to fight anger and anger.

It is a plant that grows thick and vigorous, whose thin stems are characterized by small flowers with soft and delicate colors. These grow in clusters, so they form dense tufts usually 20-30 cm high or 10-15 cm, if it is a dwarf species.

The leaves are small, lanceolate with entire margins and give off a pleasant honey scent; while, the color of the flowers ranges from light green to white-gray.

Parasites and diseases

Alyssus plants are quite strong and they rarely suffer from parasite attacks, such as aphids and scale insects. Among fungal diseases, however, it is very afraid of root rot due to water stagnation, so it is important to make sure not to overdo it with watering and, above all, always check the saucer and the soil. Exposure

This plant loves full sun, therefore we advise you to place it in an area with full light, or in a very bright spot even without direct sunlight; we do not recommend placing it in a shaded area as this will slow down growth and flowering.

Land

Alyssus has no preference for the soil, as luckily it grows well in all types of soil.

Irrigation

Likes humidity, but not stagnation; therefore, watering should be moderate, better if you check the soil first. During the summer it is good to increase irrigation, while in winter they should be suspended or practiced only in case of scarcity of rain. 

Fertilization

The soil can be enriched with nutrients, using a liquid or granular fertilizer slow release approximately every 20 days, preferably in spring or early summer.

Alisso: cultivation in pots

The alisso yes it also grows easily in pots, the important thing is that it has sufficient space for root development. If you want a pot that is lush and beautiful to look at, we recommend placing at least two seedlings at a distance of about 20-25 cm. 

Exposure and fertilization

Repotting

In spring, the plants should be transferred to a larger container with fresh, fertile and well-drained soil inside.


Pruning 

La pruning it is very simple and beginner-proof, because you only need to remove and cut the dry parts, the leaves and the damaged flowers. 

Propagation by cuttings

The alyss can propagate by cutting, thus creating new specimens identical to the mother plant; below how to proceed:

  • Use disinfected shears and take cuttings about 8 cm long from healthy twigs
  • Place the cuttings to root in sandy, moist soil
  • Wait until new leaves appear
  • After that, let the seedlings grow and when they become strong and vigorous proceed to repotting, in the ground or in pots.
