Summer, now we are. And with the summer the temperatures rise. Although there are many and effective solutions to cool down, especially when it is too hot, the air conditioner is used. It is therefore time to do some maintenance, to make it work at its best and reduce waste.

Change or clean the filter

You can also do it yourself. Changing the filter regularly (or washing it in the case of a reusable filter) will keep the air conditioner in top condition, especially during periods of heavy use. This ensures adequate airflow, avoiding waste. Additionally, a clean filter keeps dirt out of the system coils. Each air conditioner has its own way, illustrated in the instruction booklet. It is usually recommended to replace the filter every 30-90 days. Do this more often if you live in a very dusty or polluted area or if you have allergies.

Annual maintenance

Plan annual maintenance by contacting technicians. The best time to do this is spring, before the period of greatest use begins, or autumn. Technicians will clean and inspect the system and test the performance of key components.

Cleaning the split

A certain amount of dust is normal and will not damage the system or affect the indoor air quality of the home. However, if the ducts are seriously clogged with dust, pet hair, and other debris, they will in fact dump dust into the rooms. They may also have mold. Cleaning splits is typically a 2-step process that involves removing dirt with special equipment and using a powerful vacuum cleaner to clean it completely.

If you do not want to contact specialized technicians, you can also do it yourself by removing the dust from the outdoor unit with a simple dry cloth.

Optimize the use of air conditioning

To do this, the solutions are different, from the installation of ceiling fans, efficient from an energy and economic point of view, but able to increase the benefits obtained from the air conditioner, reducing waste and saving on consumption.

It is also useful to install an intelligent thermostat that allows you to know the exact temperature by limiting energy waste. It allows you to switch on and off the air conditioning systems even remotely.

Finally, another piece of advice is to "downsize". Compared to the past, now the air conditioners are equipped with inverter technology, thanks to which the device does not stop but works at a minimum to maintain the set temperature, reducing energy expenditure. For this you do not need powerful air conditioners but just buy one suitable for the surface you want to cool.

Finally, if you buy a new air conditioner, pay attention to the SEER or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER value). The higher the SEER, the less we will pay annually to run the air conditioning.

In any case, if possible we try to minimize its use by opting for alternative solutions, also exploiting the tax deductions of the 2018 eco-bonus for the purchase of awnings and sun screens, in order to have more shade and less need to use the air conditioner.
