It is dedicated to drama of migrants the new installation of Ai Weiwei, the dissident Chinese artist who sends a strong message on the eve of the gala Cinema for peace, an initiative in which films with a social and humanitarian content are awarded.
The temporary artwork is located in the Gendarmenmarkt square but the life jackets were all collected in theisland of Lesbos, in Greece. The plight of migrants is very dear to Ai Weiwei who is engaged in a new focused project on refugees: bad quality life jackets are manufactured in the textile industries in Turkey and traffickers sell them at high prices to migrants before starting the crossing.
In the installation there is also one of the boats used for the rescues. The artist often uses social networks and Instagram to highlight the social problems related to deaths at sea.
