Growing garlic near certain plants can protect them from pest attacks upstream. For many species, in fact, the proximity to it and its pungent aroma is a real godsend. Its characteristic smell, iIt prevents parasites from easily picking up the scent of a beautiful rose garden or that of the sweet fruits of a peach tree. In particular:

  • Many experts recommend planting garlic at the rosettes to effectively remove woodworms, aphids and beetles of all kinds.
  • Planting a garlic ring around the trunk of a peach tree can also help keep pests away.
  • The same goes for carrots, leeks and onions: with its smell, garlic helps to cover that of other plants thus preventing the proliferation of flies and other harmful insects.

Garlic is a great ingredient for create natural pesticides to be sprayed directly on plants. Combined together with the Chili pepper gives life to a very powerful weapon in the fight against parasites.

This 100% natural pesticide it mostly works like preventive measure and also acts on insects and mosquito larvae.

  1. The simplest recipe to get this potent blend is as follows: take some green chillies, three cloves of garlic and a very small onion, crush them well and put them in a container. Let it steep for at least a day and you will have your pesticide.
  2. A second recipe consists of a puree of four cloves of garlic, a small onion, a chilli pepper, all immersed in a liter of water for two hours, then filtered and mixed with a teaspoon of vegetable oil.
  3. For the vegetables you can use a specific mixture consisting of six cloves of garlic, an onion, a spoonful of cayenne pepper, all diluted in a liter of hot water.
  4. A specialty that should never be missing in our refrigerator just in case is a garlic oil. Just chop a head of garlic in a cup of vegetable oil then refrigerate for a couple of days.
  5. To prevent the beetle infestations on potatoes and cabbage it is possible to boil a cup of water with two cloves of garlic and a handful of wild mustard leaves. Let the mixture cool and then spray it on the plants.

These blends can be vaporized directly on the leaves of our plants.

Garlic fungicide

Garlic has excellent fungal abilities against fungal diseases. Several scientific studies have proven its effectiveness against proliferation of fungi in crops. 

Here how to make a fungicidal mixture. Crush four garlic heads and boil them with half a cup of baking soda in 4 liters of water. Let it cool to room temperature and then, using a watering can, slowly wet the soil around the infected plants so that the preparation can penetrate deeply.

Of course, garlic is not the magic bullet against all fungi - some will be much more difficult to eradicate.

In short, garlic is not only good to keep vampires away or to give more flavor to our favorite dishes: it is an unparalleled ally in the fight against fungi and garden pests.
