Circa 4.000 wild horses will captured and killed in New South Wales in order to protect ecosystems after the Australian bushfires.

According to Matt Kean, New South Wales Environment Minister, as many horses as possible and many of them will be removed they could be slaughtered and end up on the tables.

These are specimens born from horses that have escaped, abandoned or long lost, who live in the wild and have managed to survive the flames that have broken out in recent months. Just fleeing from the fires, the herds have entered protected areas, which are now damaging.

The management of wild horses has long been a very controversial topic. The number of animals is estimated to have grown rapidly, especially in recent years, and the wild horse population now exceeds 25.

Numbers that cause concern due to the possible damage that the hooves of horses can cause in a sensitive and vulnerable natural area, which is home to plant and animal species that are threatened and already severely tested by fires.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) said the intervention will cover approximately 57.000 hectares in three areas of the country: the Nungar Plain, the Cooleman Plain, and parts of the Boggy and Kiandra Plains.

It seems that the initiative has not raised any kind of controversy because in addition to damaging the environment, horses are still encountering difficulty surviving due to the limited food and water resources left after the passage of the fire.
