After 20 years of horror, a breeding-lager where Jindo dogs were slaughtered for a restaurant closes in South Korea

In South Korea it was a kennel that slaughtered dogs of the national Jindo breed for the menu of a local restaurant. Save 66 animals

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

For more than twenty years, a South Korean lager farm slaughtered thousands of purebred dogs Jindo (originally from the Korean island of the same name), to be used for human consumption. But now, finally, the horror is over. The well-known Korean slaughterhouse has closed its doors forever and 66 dogs, including some puppies, have been rescued.

The closure took place thanks to the agreement reached with Humane Society International Korea and the Korean group for the protection of animals LIFE. The farm is run by a 66-year-old breeder who also owns a local restaurant where dogs ended up on the menu. For years he managed to act undisturbed, but a series of reports made by the residents of the area (suspicious of the animal's cries of terror) led the authorities to make the terrible discovery.

The poor dogs were found locked in small metal cages, waiting to be subjected to electrocution before being slaughtered. A bleak scene. The 66 rescued dogs will be transferred to an animal shelter, where they will receive initial veterinary care and vaccinations. Subsequently, they will be transferred to North America to be placed in the care of American and Canadian families who want to welcome them.

Slaughter of dogs: a practice still too widespread in South Korea

All the dogs of this kennel are of the Jindo breed, which should be the Korean national breed - says Nara Kim, activist of Humane Society Korea - Instead, these poor dogs were locked up in filthy metal cages, fed with leftovers from restaurants; they have been denied even the most basic care and the slightest human kindness. As a proud Korean I am always shocked by the cruelty of meat dog farms but it was particularly shocking to see our country's most representative dog breed exploited in this way, on Jindo Island. I cried when I saw the slaughterhouse. At the site of their electrocution there was a large pile of collars of all the animals that were killed. Fortunately, together with our LIFE colleagues, we were able to get these dogs out of that horrible place and ensure that no animals will suffer there anymore. Authorities will also pursue allegations of cruelty leveled against the farmer. As the Animal Protection Act currently offers little protection to dogs raised for their meat, it is encouraging to see law enforcement leveraging the few rules available to them.

The Humane Society Internationa organization has already led to the closure of 17 other dog farms destined for slaughter in South Korea, saving over 2500 dogs, and is continuing to political pressure to end (once and for all) the meat industry. of dogs, a practice still very widespread in the country. In fact, it is estimated that 1 to 2 million dogs live in thousands of lager farms throughout South Korea.

I feel enormous anger. - admits In-Seob Sim, president of LIFE - We pride ourselves on this breed as our national dog, but at the same time the Jindos are served on the table. This is an example of the duplicity of human beings but also of the contradictions within Korean society. Is there really a difference between a pet Jindo dog and an edible Jindo dog as dog meat traders want us to think? The answer is no. They are both the same dogs and pets.
