Afghanistan plagued by heavy rains and floods that bring death and destruction, in general silence

In the general silence of the West, we have struggled even to find information on the terrible climate tragedy that is affecting the northern and western regions of Afghanistan

Afghanistan is grappling with heavy rains and floods, which in recent days have already killed 22 people and injured another 40, destroyed hundreds of homes and damaged crops. The situation is dramatic in 12 provinces - about one third of the national territory: the western provinces of Badghis and Faryab and the northern one of Baghlan were particularly affected by the heavy rains.

The local government, in the hands of the Taliban armed forces, is trying to cope with the disaster with the few means available, in a country already afflicted by a serious humanitarian crisis. Officials announced that they will soon turn to international humanitarian organizations for help and relief supplies.

In recent years, Afghanistan has suffered the dramatic consequences of an unprecedented drought, exacerbated by climate change and rising temperatures, which has halved crops and triggered a severe famine.

The lack of food and water resources was grafted on to decades of civil war and the dissatisfaction of the population in the face of the Taliban dictatorship which, after the takeover last August, effectively blocked a large part of the economic and humanitarian aid coming from abroad.

Now the international community is watching this latest environmental disaster caused by human action from afar, while solutions are being studied that can be applied immediately to help the civilian population of Afghanistan without favoring the Taliban government.

All this in the general silence of Western public opinion, all aimed at the Ukrainian conflict that exists and is ignoble - of course - but which must not make us forget many other tragedies that still claim victims, even among children.
