A group of scientists is monitoring the plight of penguins to safeguard them from the negative consequences of global warming and climate change and are looking for volunteers willing to observe hundreds of photos of penguins from which to obtain important information on their health and behavior.

Scientists on the Penguin Watch 2.0 project need someone to help them count and track penguins. They need to observe the penguins while they are in their natural habitat in any weather condition and without disturbing their habits.

This is why the observation and counting of penguins takes place from afar, for example from the PC monitor, thanks to the use of cameras that record these animals while they are in their natural environment.

To monitor penguin colonies in Antarctica, scientists have positioned 75 cameras they collect 8 to 96 images per day over the course of a year. Therefore, the need to have someone available to study and observe the thousands of images that experts have available annually is evident. In fact, from the images of penguins, interesting data and information can be drawn on their state of health and behavior.

Experts are mainly interested in observing the changes in penguin behavior, the survival rate of the young, the mating phases based on climate change and variations in the ice sheet.

Internet users who wish to help scientists save penguins can connect to the project website to observe the images depicting these animals and to draw from them information on their behavior and the conditions of their nests.

At the moment the volunteers who have already joined the project are more than 28 thousand e the images posted on the site are over 3 million. There are more than 100 penguin monitoring stations. You can sign up as individual volunteers or propose yourself as a school or an educational project and ask to observe a specific penguin colony. The Web site it is interactive: just log in to start viewing the images immediately and help catalog them.
