We are at Soneva Fushi, a 5-star resort on Baa Atoll that opened Ultimate Library, the first bookstore in the Maldives last December. After a very successful first season, the shop will reopen its doors in mid-October and is now on the hunt for Barefoot Bookseller, a bibliophile to manage the barefoot book sales.
A dream job and anyone can apply as long as they read, know English and keep up to date the blog that tells the life of the bookseller (and the bookshop).
As reported in The Guardian, due to the pandemic this year no one applied and the last of the three booksellers who remained preferred to return to his family last April.
“The Maldives are practically Covid free and the resort we operate with has its own medical center and rigorous testing procedures, making it a very safe place. We are determined to reopen to tourism, and so will our library to take back all the titles we have missed, ”said Philip Blackwell, CEO of Ultimate Library.

The offer
Main requirements are excellent knowledge of spoken and written English. In addition, you need “a lively tone of voice to write funny blogs and newsletters that express the hilarious life of a bookseller on a desert island and the skills to organize workshops and events”, and finally a proactive attitude. Those selected will undergo remote professional training before reaching the Maldives.
