A small white spot inside the pupil of the little one, visible only in photos taken with a flash, made it possible to diagnose this rare childhood cancer.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Nowadays, with the smartphone always in your pocket, it seems natural to immortalize every moment of our child with a photo or video. Sometimes it happens that these shots taken lightly can prove to be providential in the diagnosis of even very serious pathologies.

This is the case of retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer that can be highlighted by taking a simple photo with a flash, which will return an unnatural white glow inside the pupil of the photographed subject. As happened to Leonnie Ord, of Birmingham, that she spotted one anomaly in the left eye of his son Cillian, barely a year, which only showed up when he took pictures of him with a flash.

The young mom had begun to notice a whitish glow in her son's pupil immortalized in photos taken with the flash already during the summer, but this anomaly came and went, and she did not initially give it too much weight, considering it an effect of light. After a few months, the glow began to show itself more prominently and was always present in the photos, regardless of the lighting conditions.

It was then that Leonnie began to get seriously worried and put little Cillian for a medical check-up. The specialist who visited him then expressed the serious diagnosis: retinoblastoma. Undergoing surgery for the removal of the tumor mass, the little boy has lost the use of his left eye and is now undergoing a course of chemotherapy to recover completely.

His parents launched a fundraiser on the web to financially support Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, a non-profit organization that deals with help families with children affected by this rare form of cancer, diagnosed in just 40 children each year across the UK. What is retinoblastoma

Il retinoblastoma It is the most common form of eye cancer in children, as it arises early in the development of the eye. The precursors of the cells of the retina (retinoblasts) multiply and generate the cells that will make up the mature retina: if the retinoblasts continue to multiply out of control and without maturing, they give rise to the tumor form.

Fortunately, this is a rather rare condition, affecting one child under the age of 5 for every 18.000-20.000. We also underline that retinoblastoma is a hereditary disease, linked to a mutation of the Rb1 gene transmitted from a parent to their children.
