Some shocking photos arrive from Brazil depicting a man walking on a river, or rather on mountains of waste that have now been deposited in the water for kilometers and kilometers.

The images were made public by several Brazilian news broadcasts, arousing the indignation of citizens who demand immediate interventions. The situation has indeed exceeded all acceptable limits.

We are all sadly used to seeing some waste floating in the sea or on rivers, sometimes it is also heaps of garbage but a situation like the one that the Sarapui River has reached in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in the south-east of Brazil, it is much rarer.

As you can see from the images, taken on the morning of November 6, a barefoot man is able to 'walk on water' thanks to the incredible amount of waste accumulated in the river. In practice, the man walks on bottles, cans, pieces of wood and glass, plastic and other waste materials, a mountain of garbage that has now invaded the river.

In this way, anyone could travel several kilometers reaching Mendanha State Park, a highly biodiverse forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro that is home to Yaguarondi, lowland pacas and other animals that have their precious natural habitat in the area.

The wooded area was designated as a state nature park in 2013, in part to protect the region's water resources. Which obviously was not done.

The Sarapui River flows for 36 km through the state of Rio de Janeiro and, due to the impermeability of the soil and the reduced space for the flow of water, often overflows causing flooding in many areas. A problem that aggravates an already difficult situation for the inhabitants of the area, many of whom do not even have access to basic sanitation.
