The idea is of Richard Hewitt, former design student and now entrepreneur, which he created a washing machine powered by cycling after a trip to Burundi.
During his stay he had helped out in an orphanage, washing children's clothes by hand in buckets of cold water. It is difficult to imagine a washing machine in countries where there is no electricity and where there is no water in the house.
So Hewitt decided to design a alternative washing system not only that it did not need electricity, but that it consumed little water. SpinCycle was born, a prototype that was part of his thesis in Product Design at Sheffield Hallam University.
The concept was so popular that Gripple's Incub Scheme and Ideas and Innovation department decided to invest in the development of this system.
SpinCycle: how does it work?
The project is based on a tricycle-shaped mechanism with a plastic barrel for washing clothes in the back, which has a washing drum and canisters inside, perforated internal drums driven by the belt and a soap grater for the use with detergent blocks, widely used in Africa.
So basically, you charge the device with dirty clothes, detergents and water, then pedal for ten minutes. The next step is to drain and refill with rinse water and then off another ten minute ride to complete the wash. The same method can also be used to dry clothes once they are clean.
In a video shot in 2012 Richard Hewitt explained his invention which today is turning into reality:
“In addition to saving a lot of time, energy and water, people might also be able to make some money this way,” the entrepreneur said.
In short, a nice idea that is good for the environment and people.
