A fossil fuel war is underway in Ukraine. The alarm of the leading Ukrainian climate scientist

A fossil fuel war is underway in Ukraine. The alarm of the leading Ukrainian climate scientist

It is now clear to everyone how much our country and Europe in general is dependent on other nations for energy sources. Yes, because we are always looking for those fossils that we do not have in our subsoils and that scientists have always called 'non-renewable' because, in fact, they will run out (and are already in short supply). The war in Ukraine is because of them, as Svitlana Krakovska, the leading Ukrainian climate scientist, argues

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

At the origin of the war in Ukraine there is the climate crisis and our race to grab what remains of the fossil sources, polluting, obsolete, which are in short supply and which in any case have an uneven distribution on the planet (like many other raw materials). Svitlana Krakovska, Ukraine's leading climate scientist calls the tragedy a "fossil fuel war".

The expert contributed to thelatest IPCC report which highlighted the human, economic and geopolitical catastrophe of fossil fuels. According to the document, in fact, about half of the world's population is now extremely vulnerable to disasters deriving from these energy sources, with Russian military power supported by the wealth obtained thanks to the country's vast reserves of oil and gas.

I started thinking about parallels between climate change and this war - reports to The Guardian la Krakovska - and it is clear that the roots of both these threats to humanity lie in fossil fuels. The burning of oil, gas and coal is causing warming and impacts that we must adapt to. And Russia sells these resources and uses the money to buy weapons. Other countries depend on them, they don't get rid of them. This is a fossil fuel war. It is clear that we cannot continue living like this, it will destroy our civilization

There is no more time. The report highlights how the risks of climate crisis they will manifest faster and are likely to become more severe sooner than expected.

The scientific evidence is unequivocal: climate change is a threat to the well-being of people and the health of the planet - thunders Hans-Otto Pörtner, co-chair of IPCC Working Group II - Any further delay in concerted action at global level will make losing that short window of time, which is rapidly closing, to ensure a liveable future

The conflict in Ukraine has led Western governments to hastily try to extricate themselves from dependence on Russian oil and gas. The EU, which gets about 40% of its gas supply from Russia, is working on a plan for rapidly increase renewable energies, strengthen energy efficiency measures and build liquefied natural gas terminals to receive gas from other countries.

But in the short term, unfortunately, there is no solution other than to continue to "scratch" fossil fuels, with repercussions on the climate crisis. And the circle does not close, it tightens. Around us.
