A vast fire, in the past few hours, has completely destroyed one of Japan's Unesco world heritage sites. This is the Shuri castle on the island of Okinawa.

The flames broke out in the middle of the night and, despite the timely intervention of the firefighters, nothing could be done to save the main castle building located in the island's capital, Naha.

Shuri Castle, popular touristic place, dates back to the times of the Ryukyuche reign which began in 1429 and ended in the late 1800s when it was annexed by the Tokyo government. The current structure, now destroyed, was already a reconstruction which was based on the castle's original plans and ancient images. The building had in fact suffered considerable damage during the bombings of the Second World War but, following the restoration, it was reopened to the public as a national park in 1992 and, in 2000, it became a Unesco world heritage site.
