Climate change and dangers to animals. The situation is dramatic not only for polar bears in Canada and for puffins in Alaska, but also for the reindeer in Siberia. 80 reindeer died of starvation because of climate changes.

Over the past 10 years, according to researchers fromUniversity of Lapland, at least 80 reindeer died in the pensola at Yamal.

According to new research, climate change is the cause of this phenomenon.

The Yamal peninsula in the north-west of Siberia has always been considered the perfect natural habitat for reindeer, but apparently something is changing in the ecosystem of this area of the world.

Lo study in question was recently published in the scientific journal Biology Letters. In 2013 alone, well 61 reindeer starved to death on the Yamal Peninsula. This was the largest event ever recorded regarding a local reindeer death. A previous death occurred in 2006 with the disappearance of 20 thousand specimens.

Reindeer they died of starvation because their habitat changed. Too thick layers of snow did not allow them to access the lichens and plants they need for their survival. Reindeer can partially dig through snow and ice sheets by digging with their paws, but between 2006 and 2016, sheets too thick for them formed.

The abnormal temperature changes led to the freezing of thick layers of snow and experts say this has put the reindeer in trouble. Now it is feared that a new mass death of reindeer is around the corner. Arctic glaciers are shrinking and the IUCN has already listed reindeer among them vulnerable animals, as their population from 1990 to 2015 shrank by 20%.
