7 ways to fight the heat at home without using air conditioning

Summer, often synonymous with heat and mugginess. There seems to be only air conditioning to give relief and so the race to buy air conditioners and air conditioners has already begun. Unfortunately, however, air conditioning systems to cool the interior of homes or cars consume an enormous amount of energy, increasing the production of greenhouse gases, which in turn overheat the atmosphere. So, paradoxically, the hotter it is externally, the more energy is burned to cool our homes, our offices and our cars and the greater the contribution to global warming will be.

Install a ceiling fan

Using a ceiling fan indoors is a great way to save energy and money, and not just in the warmer months. In fact, installed correctly and therefore directing the blades correctly, it can save you 40% in summer and 10% in winter, just adjust the switch at the base of most models so that the blades that turn clockwise, contribute to circulate the hot air that has risen up to the ceiling.

Get some awnings

It has been estimated by the US Department of Energy according to a Washington Post article that installing awnings can reduce solar heat build-up in our homes. In fact, the temperature increases due to the amount of sun entering through the windows (between 65% and 77% depending on the exposure).

Install light curtains for the windows

Try, at least during the summer season, to put light-colored curtains on the windows. In fact, the colors reflect the sun by increasing the heat.

Turn off all electronic devices

Make sure your computer, television, and all non-essential electronic devices are always turned off and unplugged at night. Not only because this involves great energy savings but above all to reduce the heat given off by these appliances when they work.

Plant trees or grow climbing plants on the exterior walls

To shade your house but above all the bedroom you could (obviously those who have a large garden) plant trees. This will allow for a huge reduction in heat. Climbing plants like vines or ivies also work just as well, and in addition to growing quickly they have an immediate effect and can drastically reduce the maximum temperatures of a home by as much as 50% with little space. Amazingly, they also work in the winter to keep you warm, keeping a cushion of air and reducing wind and frost. Which is nothing more than the concept behind the worldwide diffusion of green hanging and vertical gardens

Eat lots of fruit

Is there anything more refreshing than a tasty melon slice? Or a juicy plum or a peach? The reason why fruit becomes so tempting to our taste buds during the summer days is because our body needs foods with a high moisture content. So try to eat a lot seasonal fruit (summer is the period in which there are more types) and obviously local.

Cold shower

Before going to sleep, treat yourself to one nice cold shower! Not only will this allow you to save energy, lower your body temperature but it is an advantage for yours health and beauty. In fact, cold water helps circulation and closes the pores. You will feel more radiant when you wake up in the morning.

And finally try to eat spicy foods. Spicy foods in fact do not raise the body temperature but help to sweat thanks to capsaicin, a chemical found in chili peppers, and this will not only allow you to excrete toxins but will make you feel fresher as the sweat dries.
