Inside the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina, six calves of red wolf Canis rufus came into the world not long ago and were found, to the utmost amazement, by the park rangers who protect the species present here. .

This is an unexpected birth of 4 females and 2 males which had not happened for four years, since in 2018 a female had given birth to four specimens of red wolf, but in captivity. The young were born in nature and are the children of the two specimens, mother 2225 and father 232, reintroduced into the habitat years ago.

The red wolf is placed on the IUNC's red list as one critically endangered species, as the number of its populations dropped to a peak all over the world around the second half of the twentieth century.

In 1967 the red wolf appeared on the list of the Endangered Species Preservation Act which convinced the American government to urgently arrange a captive breeding program to save the species at the last minute, restricting its distribution area in Texas and Louisiana in order to be able to monitor the number. .

However, since intensive hunting and the destruction of the natural habitat continued undaunted to decimate the populations that could still be seen in the wild, the red wolf was declared extinct in 1980.

This continued only in the zoos participating in the project and it was possible to bring the number of specimens from 14 to 241. Of these, some litters were reintroduced into what little remained of their habitat and in 2012 there were 120 red wolves in the wild, of which 89 followed with radio collar.

After the successful start, the population dropped dramatically again. According to estimates by the Red Wolf Recovery Program - the species conservation program of the US Fish & Wildlife Service - today there would be only 15-17 red wolves in the wild. A number so small that it is scary to say the least.

This is why the newborn litter is a beacon in the dark, a sign of hope for the protection of this species so threatened by humans in the years to come.
