The canine meat trader, an Indonesian on his way to Sukoharjo, was arrested by the police

Fortunately, yet another slaughter of animals was avoided. 53 domestic dogs, kidnapped and stolen from their families, were found by Indonesian police crying and shivering with fear, tied inside garbage bags in the back of a truck; their little faces were tied with twine or with electrician's cable ties, to prevent them from biting or barking. They had been on the road for more than ten hours, destined for an illegal slaughterhouse in Sukoharjo, on the island of Java.

The truck was stopped by the local police just as it arrived at the slaughterhouse where about thirty dogs are beaten to death every day, whose meat is destined for human consumption. The man driving the truck of horrors was arrested on suspicion of illicit trade in dog meat. The dogs were all little more than puppies: most of them were wasted and injured, and one dog sadly died from the consequences of the journey. The animal rights association Dog Meat Free Indonesia promptly intervened to take care of the rescued animals:

My heart was pounding in my chest as we approached the truck, because I could hear the pitiful whimpering of the dogs and then I saw them all tied up in sacks, their soft muzzles closed with wire - said the activist. Lola Webber. - They were extremely traumatized and frightened. We got there just in time because the killing usually happens in the early hours of the morning. We are immensely grateful to the authorities for taking action.

The rescued dogs received emergency veterinary care from volunteers right away and were then transferred to a shelter. It is hoped to be able to return them to the families from which they were stolen, even if it will be difficult to find pet owners - despite the many local appeals launched by environmentalists. If they cannot be reunited with their human friends, they will be put up for adoption.

Unfortunately, in Indonesia, as well as in other countries of the world, There is no nationwide ban on the trade in dog meat for human use: so far it has been governments and regional administrations that have taken action against this horrific slaughter, while the government has pledged only to crack down on trade - as in this case, in which the meat trader was the focus of a police investigation local that has been going on for months: according to the investigators, it would have coordinated the shipments of hundreds of dogs for slaughter every month.
