Many of the Loggerhead sea turtles found stranded on the beaches of South Africa last year they had ingested some plastic. Unfortunately, plastic waste in the oceans, including bottles, packaging and various fragments, is very harmful to marine animals, including fish, whales, birds and turtles.

A study recently published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin reported that 24 out of 40 sea turtles died within two months of stranding in April 2015, and that 16 of them had ingested plastic. Notably, 11 turtles died because the plastic was blocking their digestive system or bladder.

The plastic ingested by the turtles consisted mostly of hard plastic fragments, which represent some of the most widespread waste in the oceans. According to researchers, the amount of plastic ingested by sea turtles off South Africa has increased. In addition to the hard plastic fragments the turtles studied had ingested some plastic fibers but also parts of flexible packaging.

Unfortunately, the beaches of South Africa have been inundated with plastic in recent years. The data speak of approx 400 pieces of plastic per square meter and the studies rank South Africa among the worst countries for dumping plastic into the sea, along with Bangladesh and India.

According to NRF South Africa, the real problem is linked to the lack of proper disposal of plastic. Additionally, some plastic packaging, such as candy wrappers, is difficult to recycle. But one solution is possible in the opinion of experts: improve the management of plastic waste, give it a value and try to remove it from the beaches.

Plastic pollution of the oceans and beaches is endangering sea turtles around the world. Last year the video of the removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle in Costa Rica he had traveled around the world.

In another video here is it removing a plastic fork from a turtle's nose.

It is time to intervene to reduce the problem of plastic in the oceans and on the beaches because both our planet and the wonderful animals that populate it are in danger.
