They are all dying. The numbers coming in from Tasmania are terrifying. More than 450 pilot whales have beached themselves on the coasts, but over 380 have already died. So far, rescuers have managed to rescue about 50 of them.

It is a disaster. The animals are dying very quickly and attempts to put back those who seem to be better are worth little. It is a real massacre and one of the most serious strandings ever.

About 270 cetaceans ran aground in the port of Macquarie in Tasmania, but yesterday helicopters spotted another 200 at a distance of 10 km. The animals were stuck on a sandbar and it seems they are all dead. According to local authorities, it is one of Australia's worst mass strandings.

For Dr. Kris Carlyon, wildlife biologist with the marine conservation program, the discovery of 200 more cetaceans made the beaching the largest in Tasmania's history. It was 1935 when there was a similar event but then the beached animals were 294.

Nic Deka, coordinator of rescue operations for the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, said they were fighting to save the remaining 30 whales, but the focus was now on recovering and disposing of the dead whales.

"We will try to save as many live animals."

Unfortunately, the second discovery took place two days after the first even though the animals were probably stranded together with the others. Unfortunately the waters are very dark, which is why they were not noticed. In any case, their fate would not have changed as rescuers are already struggling to manage the first 270 pilot whales, many of which are dying despite attempts to rescue them.
