25 barrels of toxic DDT discovered in submerged landfill in the Pacific that shocked scientists

Discovery of a real underwater landfill in Los Angeles Bay with drums containing industrial waste, probably DDT

A huge environmental tragedy, which shocked the same scientists who discovered it. A real underwater landfill in the Los Angeles Bay has been detected by researchers from the University of San Diego, who have thus unearthed thousands of drums containing industrial waste, probably DDT, abandoned in recent decades at a depth of more than 900 meters.

Marine scientists say they have found what they believe is beyond 25.000 drums probably containing DDT dumped in the south of the Californian coast, not far from the island of Santa Catalina. The images of the toxic drums were captured by researchers from the University of San Diego's Institute of Oceanography, California, who plumbed more than 36.000 acres of seabed between Santa Catalina Island and Los Angeles Bay. An area already identified as particularly polluted, containing high levels of toxic chemicals in the ecosystem.

Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Sea Basin has been used as a real industrial landfill for several decades, starting in the 30s. The naval registers of the last century show how the industrial companies of Southern California used the basin as a landfill until 1972 - the year ofOcean Dumping Act which prohibited the release into the ocean of material that damages or endangers human health or the marine environment.

Underwater drones used sonar technology to capture high-resolution images of drums deposited 900 meters deep. The amount of waste found on the seabed is disconcerting. In addition to the toxic drums, in fact, the researchers also found a large area used as a scrap dump. The investigation yielded a proper mapping of the kegs, however further investigation will be needed to confirm that the kegs actually contain DDT. The tons of DDT that were thrown into the area 20 km from Los Angeles and 12 km from Santa Catalina would be about 700.

The long-term effects on marine life and human health are still unknown. Furthermore, these findings raise questions about the impact of prolonged exposure on the health of animals and humans - especially in light of how DDT has been shown to have effects on humans even with the generational shift.
